Mental Golf Workshop

The Mental Golf Workshop is a unique online system dedicated to helping golfers and instructors improve the mental aspects of playing golf. Your profile provides over 20 pages of information based on the DISC Profile method, a popular program used to help people reach higher levels of performance. Your traits are measured in six key areas of the game: golf temperament, pre-round preparation, mental tendencies over the ball, course management, learning style and how best to work with instructors and fitness trainers. The Workshop helps you understand, use and modify these traits to maximize your performance.

The online process asks you a series of questions that will help determine your attitudes and behaviors. A detailed report is generated and emailed to you within minutes. It will only take about ten minutes to answer the seventeen multiple-choice questions on the online questionnaire.

Please click this link to visit their website and learn more about the profile. Following this link will also identify you as my student and allow you to register for the online evaluation.

The fee for this service is $75 and can be paid by credit card on their website.

Goal Setting

Effective goal setting requires several key ingredients; a realistic assessment of one's current skill set including strengths and weaknesses, a clear picture of what you would like to accomplish and then an achievable strategy for how to move forward.

As part of your lesson program, I will provide guidance with your goal setting process. After you have taken the Mental Golf Profile, you may find it useful to dedicate an hour lesson to reviewing the profile and discussing your specific goals with me and how best to achieve them.

Recommended Reading

Winning the Battle Within, The Perfect Swing is the One You Trust" by Dr. Glen Albaugh and Michael Bowker

I highly recommend this enjoyable book to anyone pursuing a commitment to sustained improvement and greater enjoyment of the game. Dr. Albaugh taught Sports Psychology for 28 years at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA and coached the men's golf team.

He has helped countless players and teachers in Northern California and elsewhere, including PGA Tour players Kirk Triplett and Scott McCarron. Football coaches Bill Walsh and Pete Carroll have also benefited from his expertise.

I found this book to be both fascinating and practical. I can't say enough about it so I will instead refer you to their website to learn more about the book.

Golf Statistic Software

The best way to track your scoring is with golf statistics software. These programs allow you to record detailed information about your rounds of golf and then track the information over a period of time. More advanced programs allow you to chart and compare your statistics to other players at your handicap level or to tour pros.

It is a fun and effective way to identify and quantify which parts of your game need attention.

You can find free software online or pay for the more advanced programs. Here are some of the best services that I have located:

On Course Instruction

On course instruction allows me to see firsthand how a student performs and makes decisions on the course. The actual setting is ideal for course management, strategy, recovery play and trouble shots such as playing from uneven lies. It is also the best way to work on pre and post shot routines and learn how to take your swing changes to the course.

The on-course sessions are tailored to the specific needs of the individual so that players of all levels can benefit from this type of instruction.

The Fleming 9-Hole Course at Harding Park offers an excellent venue for on-course instruction. With the same conditioning as the championship course, it has three - four holes that require a driver or fairway wood from the tee and several really great par 3’s. The small greens provide a great challenge that will test all parts of your game.

Please visit the lesson rates page to view on-course programs and fees.
